Deck and Fence Painting.

Timber deck oiling, staining and fence painting in Ashgrove and Inner West Brisbane. Honest pricing, proper prep, and finishes suited to Brisbane's climate.

Protecting Your Deck and Fence from Brisbane's Outdoor Conditions

Brisbane's humidity, UV intensity and summer downpours are genuinely tough on bare timber. In suburbs like Ashgrove, Bardon and The Gap, outdoor timber surfaces tend to sit in dappled or direct sun for most of the day and absorb moisture during our wet season. Without regular maintenance, decking boards grey out, splinter and start to crack. Palings warp. The whole structure can soften faster than most people expect.

This service covers the work needed to slow that process down and keep your outdoor surfaces looking decent year after year.

What the Work Actually Involves

Deck and fence painting is not just rolling colour onto wood. The preparation almost always takes longer than the coating itself.

For a typical deck job, the process goes like this:

  • Clean the surface — either with a pressure washer or a deck wash solution (sometimes both), removing mould, dirt, old flaking product and tannin bleed
  • Sand or strip where needed — particularly on decks where the old coating has peeled unevenly or where the timber has gone rough and grey
  • Allow proper drying time — this is non-negotiable in Brisbane's climate; damp timber will not hold oil or stain properly
  • Apply oil, stain or paint in the correct number of coats for the product and timber type

For fences, we follow a similar prep process. Timber palings often have mould on the back face and weathered grey on the front. We treat the surface, allow it to dry, and apply a quality exterior stain or paint depending on what the timber needs and what finish you want.

We work with penetrating oils (typically Cutek, Feast Watson or similar), semi-transparent stains and solid-colour exterior paints, depending on the condition of the timber and the result you are after. We carry brushes, rollers and spraying equipment and choose the right application method for each job.

When You Actually Need This Done

A rough guide for Ashgrove and surrounding areas:

  • Decks generally need oiling or re-staining every 1 to 3 years, depending on how much sun and rain they cop
  • Painted fences typically hold for 4 to 7 years before peeling or significant fading
  • Stained fences usually need attention every 2 to 4 years

Signs it is time to act: water is soaking into the deck boards rather than beading up, the colour has gone chalky or patchy, you can see grey or silver discolouration, or timber is starting to splinter underfoot.

The best time to schedule this work in Brisbane is late dry season, roughly August to October, when humidity is lower and you get reliable dry days in a row. We can still do the work in other months, but drying time between coats may be longer.

What It Costs in Brisbane

For a standard deck and fence job in the Ashgrove cluster, you are typically looking at:

  • Small deck (under 20 sqm): $600 to $1,200
  • Medium deck (20 to 50 sqm): $1,200 to $2,800
  • Fencing (per 10 lineal metres, both sides): $400 to $900
  • Combined deck and fence jobs often fall in the $1,500 to $4,500 range depending on scope

What moves the price up: heavily weathered or stripped timber needing extensive sanding, previous solid-colour paint that needs stripping before oil can penetrate, difficult access (raised decks over a slope are common in Bardon and Red Hill), or large fence runs with intricate paling detail.

What Our Quote Includes (and What It Doesn't)

A standard quote from us includes: surface prep within normal scope, the agreed number of coats, labour and application, and a basic site clean-up at the end.

What is typically extra or quoted separately: major timber repairs or board replacement (that is a carpentry scope, not painting), staining of undersides and structural elements if not discussed upfront, or any specialist access equipment if your site needs it.

We walk through this before you commit so there are no surprises.

Is This the Right Service for Your Property?

This service suits you if your deck or fence is structurally sound but looking tired, faded, cracked or mouldy on the surface. If boards are soft, rotting or broken, you will need a carpenter to address that first.

If you are unsure, we are happy to take a look and tell you honestly whether prep and coating will do the job, or whether there is something underneath that needs sorting before we paint.

A Note on Insurance and Qualifications

We hold public liability insurance. For the scale of work involved in deck and fence painting in Queensland, a painting licence is not legally required, but experience with timber prep and the right products makes a real difference to how long the finish holds. We only recommend this service where we are confident the timber is suitable for coating.

Quick answers

Frequently asked.

How often should I oil or stain my deck in Brisbane?
In most Brisbane installations, a penetrating oil needs reapplying every one to three years. Decks in full sun or exposed to heavy rain at the bottom of a slope tend to need attention sooner. A simple test: pour a small amount of water on the boards. If it soaks in rather than beading up, the timber is ready for another coat.
Can you paint over an existing stain or oil on my deck?
It depends on what product is already on there and how it has worn. A solid-colour paint generally cannot go over a penetrating oil without proper preparation, and in some cases the old coating needs to be stripped back entirely. We assess the existing surface before quoting so we can give you an accurate picture of what prep is involved.
What is the difference between oiling and staining a timber deck?
A penetrating oil soaks into the timber and feeds it from within, with little to no surface film. A stain sits slightly on top and adds colour while still showing the timber grain. Solid-colour paint covers the grain entirely. Oil and semi-transparent stain tend to be easier to maintain over time; solid paint can look great but requires more work when it eventually peels.
Do you paint both sides of timber fences?
We quote based on what is agreed upfront. Many homeowners only need the street-facing side done, but painting both sides does extend the life of the palings significantly by reducing moisture absorption from the back. If you want both sides coated, mention it when you enquire and we will factor that into the scope and price.
How long does a deck or fence job take to dry before we can use the area?
Penetrating oils are typically touch-dry within a few hours but need 24 to 48 hours before foot traffic. Painted surfaces usually need a full 24 hours between coats and 48 hours before regular use. In Brisbane's wetter months, drying times can stretch out. We factor this into scheduling so the job is not rushed.
Do you service suburbs outside Ashgrove for deck and fence painting?
Yes. We cover the Inner West Brisbane cluster including Paddington, Bardon, Auchenflower, Toowong, Milton, Rosalie, Red Hill and The Gap. If you are just outside that area, it is worth calling to check — we can sometimes accommodate nearby jobs depending on scheduling.
