Interior Painting in Ashgrove and the Inner West
A full interior repaint is more involved than most people expect. It's not just rolling colour onto walls. Before a brush touches anything, we move or cover furniture, lay drop sheets across floors and skirting boards, fill nail holes and hairline cracks, sand back any peeling paint, and apply primer where the surface needs it. Only then do we start cutting in around cornices, architraves and power points, followed by two coats on the walls and a finish coat on ceilings where needed. For kitchens and bathrooms we use a low-sheen or semi-gloss that handles moisture and wipes down easily. Living areas and bedrooms typically get a flat or low-sheen in whatever finish you've chosen.
We work across Ashgrove, Bardon, Red Hill, Paddington, Rosalie, Auchenflower, Toowong, Milton and The Gap. Many of the homes in this cluster are Queenslanders or post-war timber construction, which means high ceilings, VJ (vertical joint) timber walls, and a lot of detailed trim work. That adds time compared with a flat-walled brick home, and any honest quote will reflect it.
When Does an Ashgrove Home Need a Full Interior Repaint?
Paint doesn't announce its own expiry, but there are clear signs it's time. Look for:
- Yellowing or chalking, especially on ceilings near ceiling fans or older light fittings
- Scuff marks and scratches that no longer wipe clean
- Peeling or bubbling, particularly in kitchens, laundries or anywhere moisture gets in
- Colour fade that makes a room feel flat and tired
- Moving into a home where you don't know the paint history, or the previous owner's taste is not yours
As a rough guide, interior paint in Brisbane homes tends to hold up around seven to ten years under normal conditions. High-traffic areas, hallways and kids' rooms often need attention sooner. Ashgrove's humidity and the tendency for older homes to have less ventilation can also shorten that window.
There's no strong seasonal rule for interior work the way there is for exterior, but we find late autumn through winter (May to August) is a comfortable time to paint inside. Lower humidity means paint cures more evenly and drying times are more predictable.
What Does Interior Painting Cost in Brisbane?
For a typical Inner West home, interior repaints run somewhere between $1,500 and $8,000, depending on the size of the job. A couple of bedrooms and a hallway in good condition sits at the lower end. A full repaint of a three-bedroom Queenslander with VJ walls, high ceilings, and detailed cornices sits higher. Scope, surface condition and paint specification are the three biggest levers on price.
What typically moves the cost up:
- High ceilings (common in Bardon, Red Hill and Ashgrove heritage homes)
- VJ timber walls that need sealing and extra primer coats
- Significant prep work: filling, sanding back flaking paint, or spot-priming stained areas
- Premium paint brands (Dulux Wash & Wear, Taubmans Endure, etc. versus budget lines)
- Dark feature walls that need extra coats for even coverage
What we include in a standard quote:
- All labour, cutting in, rolling and finish coats
- Basic wall prep: filling minor holes, light sanding
- Drop sheets and masking
- Paint in the colours and sheen levels you've agreed to
What is typically charged separately or discussed upfront:
- Moving heavy furniture (we can help but it's worth flagging)
- Significant damage repair: large cracks, water-stained plaster, mould remediation
- Feature wall contrasts requiring additional primer coats to cover dark existing colours
We price by the job, not the hour, so you get a fixed quote before we start. If the scope changes during prep (a common one is finding water damage behind a wall), we'll tell you before we do extra work.
Is a Full Interior Repaint the Right Job for Your Home?
If you're looking at spot-touching one wall or patching a small area, a full repaint probably isn't the right call yet. Touch-ups make sense when the existing colour is still in stock and the surrounding paint is in solid condition.
A full repaint makes sense when:
- The colour is changing throughout the home
- The existing paint is in poor condition in multiple rooms
- You're preparing the property for sale or rental, and presentation matters
- You've renovated and the existing paint no longer matches
If you're not sure, a quick look in natural daylight usually settles it. Rub a dry cloth along the wall. If it comes away chalky or the surface looks uneven, fresh paint over the top won't fix the underlying problem. Proper prep first, then paint.
A Straight Note on Qualifications and Insurance
Painting is unlicensed trade work in Queensland, which means there's no mandatory licence to hold a brush. That said, any painter doing work on your home should carry public liability insurance. We do. If you're asking any painter for a quote, it's a reasonable question to put to them directly before work starts. For interior work in particular, adequate ventilation is important, especially in enclosed spaces or when using oil-based products on timber trim.
If your home is pre-1970s (common in Ashgrove and across the Inner West), there's a realistic chance of lead paint under older layers. We take appropriate precautions and can talk you through what that means for your specific job.
If you're weighing up whether your home is due for a repaint, or you want a fixed quote for a specific set of rooms, give us a call. We cover the full Inner West cluster and can usually arrange a look at the job within a few days.
